Unpopular Opinion: Paint Your Wood Furniture
Share
I said what I said. If you want to paint your furniture, then you should paint your furniture without worrying what other people think of your choice. Do the proper prep so it comes out beautiful and enjoy your hard work.
Originally, I was going to start my blog with a post about myself and why I started Repurposed Treasures but then I noticed that there are a lot of vocal, usually hateful, supporters of team "never paint wood." While I love the passion, I do not understand the anger. It reminds me of people with politics. Or sports fans. They pick a party or a team and then get angry with anyone who disagrees. Why? No politician cares about you and no one on the team does either so why ruin relationships or be hateful to other people for choosing to paint a piece of furniture?
I know there are many reasons why you would prefer wood furniture not be painted. I agree with some of the reasons but would not be hateful to anyone that made the choice to paint the furniture they own. I think painting wood furniture should not be done on amazing antique furniture pieces but if you buy it and want to paint it, do it. I don't think you should ever paint any wood furniture if you haven't researched how to properly prep the piece. Don't paint furniture if you haven't got all the proper equipment and supplies. Definitely DO NOT PAINT wood furniture if you are not willing to take the time to prep and do it properly.
There is never a reason to get mad at anyone, especially a stranger online, over them painting a piece of wood furniture they own. Just because you have sentimental attachments to a similar piece your Grandma Helen had is still not a reason to tell someone they destroyed your childhood. Who cares if it lowers the value? They love it and are enjoying it which is the best result. I, as much as anyone, love the wood grain especially on older pieces of furniture. Still not getting angry at someone who painted over it. Nobody cares if you hate the color or design choice. See a therapist if you are one of those people that go online to tell others they are horrible humans for painting wood furniture.
I remember talking to my mom in the late 90s about why grandma painted some of the beautiful wood furniture. She explained that in the early 60s and 70s that a lot of housewives started painting furniture to give their home decor a fresh look. My mom further explained that the new trend is to strip the paint and go back to the beautiful wood grain. Trends come and go all the time. Notice I didn't ask "Why did your stupid mom ruin the furniture by painting it, doesn't she know to never paint wood!"
How about we work more on supporting others, being kind and keeping unnecessary comments to ourselves. There are more important things to get angry about in the world.
Until next time, love others as Jesus commands us in John 15:12 "This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you"
