Corinne Bixby was an artist active in the late 20th century, and her works often focused on portraiture and Native American subjects. The year 1976 is significant as it marked the United States Bicentennial, a time when there was renewed interest in American history and culture.

Chief Joseph (Hinmatoowyalahtqit) was a leader of the Wallowa (Wal-lam-wat-kain) band of the Nez Perce tribe, who resisted the United States government's efforts to force them onto a reservation in the late 1870s. He is remembered for his eloquent surrender speech in 1877, which expressed his sorrow and resignation at the loss of his people's freedoms and is often referred to as the "I Will Fight No More Forever" speech. This speech cemented his place in history as a symbol of Native American resistance and dignity.

Portraits of Chief Joseph, like this one, are historically significant as they represent the struggles and resilience of Native Americans during a period of immense cultural and territorial disruption.
