James Cook Ayer was a prominent 19th-century patent medicine entrepreneur. His company J.C. Ayer & Co. was based in Lowell, Massachusetts, and produced a variety of popular remedies. These included Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, Ayer's Sarsaparilla, and Ayer's Ague Cure.
Ayer's medicines were widely advertised and sold both domestically and internationally. The bottles feature distinctive designs and embossed lettering. They were often marketed as a cure-all of a variety of ailments, though their efficacy was questionable by today's standards. The bottle represents a bygone era of medicine and advertising.
